Blackburn Rovers 2-2 Coventry City
The FA Cup is about the only competition the Sky Blues can realistically win this season. Including the 5th round, they would require four wins, albiet against Premiership teams in all probability... sounds simple! Given last season's spectacular 4-1 victory at Ewood (remember Dele's goal?) and the home win against league leaders Wolves just last week, the Sky Blue Faithful had good reason to be hopeful.
It started off badly. Santa Cruz finished off from a tight angle in front of the City fans. Rovers played within themselves and Jason Roberts could have added another before half-time. As for City, they were struggling a little, with the best chance falling to Aron Gunnarsson - his header from 6 yards flying dreadfully wide.
In the 2nd half everything changed. The single striker formation that failed miserably in the first half was sacked off and Leon Best made his comeback, to parter Clinton Morrison up front, wearing a mask due to his cheekbone fracture. James McPake also made way for Scott Dan in central defence.
For a good half hour Coventry pinned Rovers back in their own half, much to the delight of the away supporters. Corner after corner and throw in after throw in eventually led to the equaliser from a magnificent Aron Gunnarsson. His control and volley from outside the box sent the Sky Blue Army into raptures. It was a great strike - his first for City.
At 1-1 we could have finished the game against the relegation-threatened Premiership team. Michael Doyle was put through and lobbed the keeper to make it 2-1, taking a deflection into the net. Freddy Eastwood should then have added a 3rd as he did well to get into the area but shot wide.. Morrison's frustration was obvious as he was ready for a square ball.
More pressure came from City before a Valentine's Day streaker made it onto the pitch and delayed the game for a couple of minutes. But significantly, this proved to be Coventry's downfall as the referee added 5 minutes of stoppage time for this interruption. Needless to say, at 92 minutes we were winning 2-1. At full time, Chris Samba had equalised to earn Blackburn a replay at the Ricoh.
Chin up City. A great performance and a display of character. Man-of-the-match: Aron Gunnarsson. Will we win the replay? Yes. Who awaits in the quarter finals? Chelsea. Easy.
